2018 Free Learn to Skate (ages 4-9)
BYSA is pleased to offer a free Learn to Skate program once again this year. The scheduled dates are November 3rd, 10th, 17th and 24th, at the BOR in Barre (7:45am-8:30am). Come to as many as you like, there is no requirement to show up to all the lessons.
Required equipment includes skates, helmet and gloves (winter gloves are fine). Recommended equipment includes elbow pads and knee/shin pads (skateboarding pads are acceptable). We do have an inventory of equipment to borrow for this event, including helmets. PLEASE NOTE: Skate rentals are not available at the BOR anymore.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
On the ice we will have coaches and high school players available to help your child. The sessions are very laid back, the goal is fun. Children are allowed to stay on the ice as long as they wish. Coaches will try to show them a few basic techniques (getting up after falling, “duck” walk, etc). We allow them to move freely in the assigned area, but at times we’ll try to organize the whole group for a game of “Red Light, Green Light” or “Sharks and Minnows.” If your child has some experience on the ice already and has developed beyond this, we may separate them into a 2nd group and do more advanced skills.
We do have “walkers” that the children can use if they are not comfortable skating on their own. Parents are not allowed on the ice, unless they register with USA Hockey and take the appropriate training. We ask that if you are willing to coach that you help all the children not only your own.
please email email@example.com with child’s name, DOB and equipment needs. There will be a short waiver form to sign when you arrive at the rink.
